OITBs

We will be building strategic partnerships with Open Innovation Test Beds (OITBs) to accelerate the adoption of safe and sustainable chemicals across industries. By connecting innovation ecosystems, we create practical pathways for testing and scaling promising alternatives to substances of concern.

Our approach

DESIDERATA will create a strategic network of Open Innovation Test Beds (OITBs) to accelerate Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) implementation across European industries. We will unite complementary capabilities to drive development and market uptake of alternatives to substances of concern.

Our ecosystem:

  • Accelerates implementation by overcoming technical, regulatory, and market barriers

  • Bridges knowledge gaps through cross-OITB exchange

  • Scales impact from niche to widespread adoption

  • Creates lasting value beyond project timelines

Through our three-pillar approach:

Bring Up: We elevate the SSbD framework by offering regulatory benefits to stakeholders, integrating safety into educational curricula, involving actors across supply chains, and securing multi-stakeholder commitment to implementation.

Shake Up: We transform industrial practices through redesigned product compositions that eliminate hazardous substances, upscaling green chemistry in synthesis processes, addressing raw material challenges, and implementing equipment improvements for sustainable manufacturing.

Scale Up: We amplify successful initiatives by expanding adoption of biodegradable materials, developing scalable processes for environmentally-benign alternatives, creating industrial demonstrations that validate SSbD benefits, and building cross-sector implementation momentum.

Together with our partners, we drive the transition to safer chemical alternatives through coordinated innovation and shared resources for a toxic-free future.

This project is funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe Research and Innovation programme (Innovation Action - IA) in the Digital, Industry, and Space areas, under grant agreement No. 101178011 and from the Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI).
